Hidden Ritual Circle Discovered Under Peat on Isle of Arran

Archaeologists from Historic Environment Scotland, led by Dr. Nick Hannon, have discovered a possible stone or timber circle beneath the surface at Machrie Moor on the Isle of Arran. Researchers report that they found the structure using geophysical survey technology while testing the effectiveness of modern archaeological survey methods in peat-covered landscapes. The team identified 12 circular pit-like anomalies that form a ring measuring approximately 92 feet across, with space for two additional settings.

Machrie Moor is already known for its Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, which date from approximately 3500 BCE to 1500 BCE. Researchers believe this newly discovered circle dates from a similar period. For those studying the archaeology of religion and early folklore, such ritual circles provide physical evidence of ancient ceremonial practices.
