Translator’s Introduction
The book you are about to read is one of the most notorious grimoires in European history. Its reputation has always outstripped its availability. For centuries, Le Grand Grimoire circulated in whispers, its name attached to forbidden knowledge, its copies hidden in private libraries or confiscated by Church authorities. When copies did surface, they were expensive, incomplete, or deliberately garbled. The text presented here is a fresh English translation from a specific physical copy: the one held at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) in Munich, catalogued under the shelfmark Res/Phys.m. 94.
The Munich Copy
This particular copy bears the stamp “BIBLIOTHECA REGIA MONACENSIS,” the Royal Library of Munich, predecessor to the modern Bavarian State Library. How it arrived there is not recorded, but the BSB’s collection of occult and alchemical texts was built over centuries, absorbing material from dissolved monasteries, confiscated private collections, and the libraries of Bavarian electors and kings. The book sat in the “Res/Phys.m.” section, reserved for rare works on physics, natural philosophy, and what the librarians of the 18th and 19th centuries classified, with studied neutrality, as “physical mysteries.”
The title page claims the date 1411. This is a fiction. The typography, paper, binding, and printing conventions place this edition squarely in the second half of the 18th century. The BSB’s own catalog dates it to circa 1775. The false medieval date was a common trick of grimoire publishers: it lent the text an air of antiquity, suggesting that these secrets had been guarded for centuries before reaching the reader’s hands. The same technique appears in dozens of other grimoires from the period.
What the Grand Grimoire Is
The text is structured in three parts.
The First Book contains the Grand Grimoire proper: a ritual procedure for summoning and binding the demon Lucifuge Rofocale, Prime Minister of the infernal hierarchy, through a series of escalating conjurations. The operator (called the Karcist) prepares over a quarter of the lunar cycle, constructs a forked hazel wand tipped with magnetized steel (the Verge Foudroyante, or Blasting Rod), draws a cabalistic circle from virgin goatskin, and then performs three appellations of increasing force. The First Book culminates in a scripted dialogue between Solomon and Lucifuge Rofocale, in which the demon negotiates the terms of his service. Appended to this is the Centum Regum, an Italian-language section containing Lucifer’s formal oath of obedience, structured as a seven-chapter legal document.
The Second Book contains the Sanctum Regum, described as the true method for making pacts with infernal spirits. It presents the complete hierarchy of Hell: three rulers (Lucifer, Belzebuth, Astarot), six superior spirits with their sigils and domains of power, and eighteen subordinate demons. Each spirit’s specialties are catalogued with bureaucratic precision. Lucifuge Rofocale controls treasures. Satanachia controls women. Agaliarept reveals hidden secrets. Fleurety performs night work and commands hail. Sargatanas grants invisibility and opens locks. Nebiros dispenses harm and teaches the properties of all natural things. The section provides a simplified pact-making procedure for those who lack the resources for the full ritual of the First Book, complete with a model pact text to be signed in blood on virgin parchment.
The Third Section is a miscellany. It opens with a long Latin citation of spirits, drawing heavily on Christian exorcistic tradition and invoking Christ, the Trinity, the angels, and the authority Solomon used to bind demons. Then comes the necromancy chapter: a procedure for speaking to the dead that begins at Christmas midnight Mass and ends at dawn in a cemetery, involving scattered earth, crossed bones, 4,900 paces walked westward, and a specific posture for receiving the apparition. The book closes with minor magical secrets: how to make a divining rod turn, and a Latin prayer for winning lotteries.
The Tradition Behind the Text
The Grand Grimoire did not appear from nowhere. It belongs to a family of French grimoires that proliferated in the 17th and 18th centuries, all claiming Solomonic authority. Its closest relative is the Grimorium Verum (True Grimoire), which shares much of the same demonic hierarchy and several ritual procedures. Both texts draw on the older Key of Solomon (Clavicula Salomonis) tradition, which itself stretches back through Renaissance Italian manuscripts to medieval Latin compilations, and beyond that to the Testament of Solomon, a Greek text from perhaps the 1st to 5th century CE that first codified the idea of Solomon as demon-binder.
The name “Lucifuge Rofocale” appears to be unique to the Grand Grimoire and its derivatives. The name means, roughly, “he who flees the light” (from Latin lucifugus). “Rofocale” has been read as an anagram of “Focalor,” a demon from the Ars Goetia, though this is speculative. What is clear is that the Grand Grimoire’s author created a distinctive infernal bureaucracy, one modeled on the French military and court hierarchy of the Ancien Régime. Lucifer is Emperor. Belzebuth is Prince. Astarot is Grand Duke. Below them serve a Prime Minister, two Generals, a Lieutenant General, a Brigadier, and a Field Marshal. Hell, in this text, is run like Versailles.
The attribution to “Antonio Venitiana del Rabina” at the end of Chapter I is almost certainly fictitious. The name suggests an Italian or Venetian author, possibly with Jewish connections (the reference to “Rabbins” who preserved the text). No historical person of this name has been identified. The attribution may be another layer of mystification, placing the text’s origin in Italy to connect it with the Renaissance magical tradition associated with figures like Cornelius Agrippa, whose name appears on the title page.
About This Translation
This translation follows the Munich copy page by page. The text moves between three languages: the bulk is in 18th-century French, the Centum Regum is in Italian, and the Citatio Praedictorum Spirituum and several prayers are in Latin. I have translated all three into English, providing the original Latin and French for key ritual phrases where the exact wording is part of the procedure. Translator’s notes clarify obscure terms, measurements, and historical context.
The spelling of demon names follows the source text exactly. Different grimoire editions spell these names differently (Lucifugé vs. Lucifuge, Belzebuth vs. Beelzebub, etc.). I have not standardized them. Where the original text is ambiguous or clearly corrupt (as in parts of the Italian Centum Regum and the long strings of spirit names), I have translated what is there rather than emending silently.
The woodcut illustrations from the Munich copy are reproduced in their original positions within the text. These include the frontispiece of Lucifuge Rofocale, the diagram of the Blasting Rod, the Grand Cabalistic Circle, the sigils of the three rulers and six superior spirits, the Triangle of Pacts, the full-page demon illustration captioned “Je suis à toi” (“I am yours”), and the necromancy illustrations.
One thing this translation does not do is evaluate whether any of this works. The Grand Grimoire is presented here as a historical document, a window into what people in 18th-century Europe believed about the structure of the invisible world and how one might negotiate with its inhabitants. Whether those beliefs reflected something real, or were elaborate self-deception, or served social and psychological functions that had nothing to do with actual demons, is a question the text itself does not answer. It is left, as it should be, to the reader.
FIRST BOOK
THE GRAND GRIMOIRE
Chapter I.
This great Book is so rare, so sought after in our lands, that for its rarity one may call it, after the Rabbis, the true GREAT WORK, and it is they who left us this precious original that so many Charlatans have tried in vain to counterfeit, wishing to imitate the true one, which they have never found, in order to snatch money from simple folk, who turn to the first person they meet without seeking the true source. This one has been copied from the true writings of the great King Solomon, which were found by pure chance. This great KING having spent all the days of his life in the most painstaking researches and in the most obscure secrets, and the most unhoped-for ones; but at last he succeeded in all his undertakings, and he managed to penetrate to the most remote dwelling of the Spirits, which he bound and forced to obey him, by the power of his Talisman or Clavicle. For what other man, what other powerful Genius, would have had the boldness to bring to light the thundering words which God used to confound and compel the rebellious Spirits to obey, at His first command, having penetrated even to the celestial vaults to fathom the secrets and the powerful words that are the entire force of a terrible and respectable God; thus this great King took the essence of His reserved secrets, which God Himself used, this great Divinity, since He reveals to us the influences of the Stars, the constellation of the Planets, and the manner of making all sorts of Spirits appear, by reciting the great Appellations which you will find hereafter in this Book; likewise the true composition of the terrible Blasting Rod,1 and its effects which make the Spirits tremble, and which God used to arm His Angel, who drove Adam and Eve from the earthly Paradise, and with which God struck down the rebellious Angels, casting their pride into the most dreadful Abysses, by the force of this Rod which forms the clouds, which disperses the hurricanes, and makes them fall upon whatever part of the Earth you wish.
Here then follow the true words that came from His mouth, which I have followed point by point, and from which I have had every advantage and every satisfaction possible, since I have had the good fortune to succeed in all my enterprises.
Signed Antonio Venitiana del Rabina.
Chapter II.
O men! Feeble mortals! Tremble at your temerity, when you think blindly of possessing a science profound enough. Bring your mind beyond your sphere, and learn from me that before undertaking anything, you must be firm and unshakeable, and very attentive to observe exactly, point by point, everything I tell you, without which everything will turn to your disadvantage, confusion and total loss (and if on the contrary you observe exactly what I tell you, you will emerge from your lowliness and from your poverty, having full victory in all your enterprises.
Arm yourself therefore with intrepidity, with prudence, with wisdom and with virtue, to be able to undertake this great and immense Work, in which I spent sixty-seven years working day and night to arrive at the success of this great goal; one must do exactly everything that is indicated hereafter:
Primo.
You will spend an entire quarter of the Moon without frequenting any company of women or girls, so as not to fall into impurity.
Then you will begin your quarter of the Moon at the moment the quarter commences, promising to the great Adonay who is the chief of all the Spirits, to make no more than two meals per day, or for all twenty-four hours of the said quarter of the Moon, which you will take at noon and at midnight, or if you prefer, at 7 o’clock in the morning and at 7 o’clock in the evening, making the Prayer hereafter, before taking your meals during the entire said quarter.
PRAYER.
I implore you, O great and powerful Adonay, master of all the Spirits, I implore you, O Eloim. I implore you, O Jehovam. O great Adonay, I give you my soul, my heart, my entrails, my hands, my feet, my desires and my being: O great Adonay deign to be favorable to me. So be it. Amen.
Then take your meal and do not undress, and sleep as little as possible during the entire said quarter of the Moon, thinking continually of your work, and placing all your hope in the infinite goodness of the great Adonay; after which, the day after the first night of the said quarter of the Moon, you will go to a Druggist to buy a bloodstone called Ematille,2 which you will carry with you continually without fear of accident, given that from that moment the Spirit you intend to force and compel does everything he can to disgust you through fear, to make your enterprise fail, thinking by this means to free himself from the nets you are beginning to set for him: it must be observed that there should be no more than one, or three, including the Karcist3 who is the one who must speak to the Spirit, holding in hand the Blasting Rod, you will take care to choose for the place of the action a solitary and remote spot, so that the Karcist is not interrupted; after which you will buy a young virgin kid goat, which you will decorate on the third day of the moon with a garland of vervain, which you will attach around its neck to the top of its head with a green ribbon. Then you will transport it to the designated place for the apparition, and there with the right arm bared to the shoulder, armed with a blade of pure steel, the fire being lit with white wood,4 you will say the following words, with hope and firmness.
First Offering.
I offer you this victim, to the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, and this for the honor, glory and power of your being superior to all Spirits; deign, O great Adonay, to accept it as agreeable. Amen.
Then you will slaughter the kid goat and remove its skin, and place the rest upon the fire, to be reduced to ashes, which you will gather and throw toward the rising Sun, saying the following words: It is for the honor, glory and power of your name, O great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, that I spill the blood of this victim; deign, O great Adonay, to receive its ashes as agreeable.
While the victim burns, you may rejoice in the honor and glory of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, taking care to preserve the skin of the virgin kid goat, to form the circle, or the great Cabalistic Circle, in which you will place yourself on the day of the great enterprise.
Chapter III.
Containing the true composition of the Mysterious Wand, or Blasting Rod, as it is represented below.
On the eve of the great enterprise, you will go to seek a Wand or Rod of wild hazel that has never borne fruit, and that is precisely similar to the one you see above, the said Wand having to fork at the top: that is to say, on the side of the two ends; its length must be nineteen and a half inches;5 after you have found a Wand of the same shape, you will only touch it with your eyes, waiting until the next day, the day of the action, when you will go to cut it positively at sunrise; and then you will strip it of its leaves and small branches, if it has any, with the same steel blade that served to slaughter the victim, which will still be stained with its blood, given that you must take care not to wipe the said blade, beginning to cut it when the Sun begins to appear on our Hemisphere, while pronouncing the following words:
I commend you, O great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, to be favorable and to give to this Wand that I cut the force and the virtue of the rod of Jacob, of that of Moses and of that of the great Joshua; I commend you also, O great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, to enclose in this Wand all the force of Samson, the righteous wrath of Emanuel and the thunderbolts of the great Zariatnatmik,6 who will avenge the injuries of men on the great day of judgment. Amen.
After having pronounced these great and terrible words, and having always kept your eyes toward the rising Sun, you will finish cutting your Wand, and will carry it to your room; then you will seek a piece of wood which you will make the same thickness as the two ends of the real one, which you will bring to a Locksmith, to have the two small forked branches fitted with iron using the blade of steel that served to slaughter the victim, taking care that the two ends be a little sharp; when they are placed on the piece of wood, everything being thus done, you will return home, and put the said iron tips onto the real Wand. You will then take a lodestone which you will heat to magnetize the two points of your Wand, while pronouncing the following words:
By the power of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, I command you to unite and to attract all the matters that I shall wish by the power of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, I command you by the incompatibility of fire and water, to separate all matters, as they were separated on the day of the Creation of the world. Amen.
Then you will rejoice in the honor and glory of the great Adonay, being sure that you possess the greatest treasure of light. In the evening you will take your Wand, your kid goat skin, your Ematille stone, and two crowns of vervain, likewise two chandeliers and two candles of virgin wax, blessed and made by a virgin girl. You will also take a new fire-steel, two new flints with tinder to light your fire, likewise a half-bottle of brandy, and a portion of blessed incense with camphor, as well as four nails that have served at the coffin of a dead child,7 and then you will transport yourself to the place where the great work is to be done and will do exactly what follows, imitating point by point the grand Cabalistic Circle, as it is shown below.
Chapter IV.
Containing the true Representation of the grand Cabalistic Circle.
You will begin by forming a circle with the kid goat skin, as is indicated above, which you will nail down with your four nails; you will then take your Ematille stone and trace a triangle within the Circle as it is represented, beginning from the East side: you will also form with your Ematille stone the great A, the small E, the small A, and the small I, likewise the holy name of Jesus in the middle of two Crosses, so that the Spirits can do nothing from behind; after which the Karcist will have his associates enter the triangle at their place, as it is marked, and he will enter himself, without being alarmed, and whatever noise he hears, placing the two chandeliers with the two crowns of vervain to the right and to the left of the interior Triangle; this done, you will begin to light your two candles, and will have a new vessel before you, that is to say before the Karcist, filled with charcoal of willow wood, which will have been made to burn on the same day, which the Karcist will light, adding a part of the brandy, and a part of the incense and camphor that you have, reserving the rest to maintain a continual fire, suitable to the duration of the thing; all that is marked above being done exactly, you will pronounce the following words.
I present to you, O great Adonay, this Incense as the purest: likewise I present to you these coals as coming from the lightest of woods. I offer it, O great and powerful Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, with all my soul and with all my heart; deign, O great Adonay, to accept it as agreeable. Amen.
You will also take care to have upon you no impure metal, except gold or silver, to throw the coin to the Spirit, folding it in paper which you will throw to him, so that he cannot do you any harm, when he presents himself before the circle, and while he picks up the coin you will begin the following prayer, arming yourself with courage; with force and with prudence: take care also that only the Karcist speaks, the others must keep silence, even if the Spirit should question them or threaten them.
FIRST PRAYER.
O great God living in one single and same person, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I adore you with the most profound respect, and I submit myself to your holy and worthy guard with the liveliest confidence; I believe with the most sincere faith that you are my Creator, my Benefactor, my Support and my Master, and I declare to you that I have no other will than that of belonging to you for all eternity. So be it. Amen.
SECOND PRAYER.
To the great living God who created man to be happy in this life, who formed all things for his needs, and who said all shall be subject to man, be favorable to me, and do not allow that the rebellious Spirits possess the treasures, which were formed by your hands for our temporal needs. Give me, O great God, the power to dispose of them by the powerful and terrible words of your Clavicle: Adonay, Eloim, Ariel, Jehovam, Tagla, Mathon, be favorable to me. So be it. Amen.
You will take care to feed your fire with the brandy, the incense and the camphor; and will then say the prayer of the offering, as follows:
OFFERING.
I offer you this incense as the purest that I have been able to find, O Grand Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, deign to accept it as agreeable; O great Adonay, be favorable to me by your power, and grant me success in this great enterprise. So be it. Amen.
FIRST APPELLATION, TO THE EMPEROR LUCIFER.
Emperor Lucifer, Prince and master of the rebellious Spirits, I pray you to leave your dwelling in whatever part of the world it may be, to come and speak to me; I command you, I conjure you on the part of the great living God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to come without making any noise and without exhaling any foul odor, to answer me in a clear and intelligible voice, article by article, on everything that I shall ask you, without which you will be compelled, by the power of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel, Jehovam, Tagla, Mathon, and of all the other superior Spirits, who will compel you in spite of yourself. Venite. Venite.
Submit, LUCIFUGE, or you will be eternally tormented, by the great force of this Blasting Rod. In subito.
SECOND APPELLATION.
I command and conjure you, Emperor Lucifer, on the part of the great living God, and by the power of Emanuel His only Son, your master and mine, and by the virtue of His precious blood, which He shed to free men from your chains; I order you to leave your dwelling in whatever part of the world it may be, swearing that I will give you no more than a quarter of an hour’s rest, if you do not come to speak to me forthwith in a clear and intelligible voice, or if you cannot come yourself, to send me your Messenger Astarot in human guise, without noise and foul odor, without which I will strike you and all your race with the formidable Blasting Rod, to the bottom of the abyss, and this, by the power of these great words of the Clavicle. By Adonay, Eloim, Ariel, Jehovam, Tagla, Mathon, Almouzin, Arios, Pithona, Magots, Salphae, Gabots, Salamandrae, Gnomus, Terrae, Coelis, Godens, Aqua. In subito.
WARNING.
Before reading the third Appellation, if the Spirit has not appeared, you will read the Clavicle as it follows hereafter, and will strike all the Spirits by putting the two forked ends of your Wand into the fire, and in that moment do not be alarmed by the dreadful howlings you will hear, for then all the Spirits will appear; while you hear the noise, you will say yet the third Appellation.
Third Appellation.
I order you, Emperor Lucifer, on the part of the great living God, of His dear Son and of the Holy Spirit, and by the power of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam, to appear within the minute, or to send me your Messenger Astarot, obliging him to leave his dwelling in whatever part of the World it may be, declaring that if you do not appear at this moment, I will strike you again and all your race, with the Blasting Rod of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam.
If the Spirit has still not appeared, put the two ends of your Wand into the fire again, and read the powerful words hereafter of the great Clavicle of Solomon.

I also approve your Book, and give you my true Signature on Parchment, which you will attach at the end, to use it when needed, also submitting to appear before you each time I am called, when you open the Book, when you are purified, when you have the terrible Blasting Rod, and when you have composed the grand Cabalistic Circle, and when you pronounce the word Rofocale, promising to appear and to treat amicably with those who are furnished with the said BOOK, where my true Signature is found, provided that they call upon me properly, the first time they need me.
I also commit to delivering to you the Treasure you ask of me, provided you keep the secret forever, that you are charitable toward the Poor, and that you give me a piece of Gold or Silver every first day of each month: if you fail in this, you will be mine forever.

Order of the Spirit.
“Follow me, and come to see the Treasure.” Then the Karcist, armed with the Blasting Rod and the Ematille stone, will leave the Circle by the route indicated at the place marked for the Treasure, which is the gate of Adonay, and will follow the Spirit. The others will not move at all from the Circle, but will remain firm and unshakeable, whatever noise they hear and whatever visions they see; the Spirit will then lead the Karcist to the entrance of the Treasure; and it may be that the Karcist sees a great dog wearing a collar shining like the Sun, which will be a Gnome, who will be driven off by presenting the end of his Wand, upon which the Karcist will follow it, and upon arriving at the Treasure, he will be surprised to see there the person who has hidden it, who will try to throw himself upon him, but will not be able to approach him at all: the Karcist will also be provided with a piece of virgin parchment, upon which will be written the great Conjuration of the Clavicle, which he will throw onto the Treasure while at the same time taking a coin as a pledge and token of gratitude, and throwing back at once one of his own silver coins which the Spirit will have bitten, after which he will withdraw backwards, carrying with him what he could take of the Treasure, the rest being unable to escape him by the precautions taken above: taking care not to turn around at whatever noise he hears, for in that moment it will seem to him as if all the mountains of the world are crashing down upon him; he must then arm himself with intrepidity, not be alarmed and stand firm. Doing this, the Spirit will lead him back to the entrance of the Circle. Then the Karcist will begin to read the dismissal of the Spirit as it follows hereafter.
CONJURATION and dismissal of the Spirit.
Oh! Prince Lucifer, I am content with you for the present, I leave you in peace and permit you to withdraw wherever you please, without making any noise or leaving any foul odor. Think also of your engagement, for if you fail me by an instant you may be sure that I will torment you eternally with the great and powerful words of the Clavicle of the great Adonay, Eloim, Ariel and Jehovam. Amen.
Thanksgiving.
O great God who created all things for the service and use of man, we give you most humble thanks for what, by your great goodness, you have bestowed upon us during this night of your precious favors, and for what you have granted us all that we desired: it is now, O great God, that we have known the full force of your great promises, when you told us seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you; and as you have ordered and recommended us to relieve the Poor, we promise you in the presence of the great Adonay, of Eloim, of Ariel and of Jehovam, to be charitable and to spread upon them the rays of the Sun with which these four powerful Divinities have just filled us. So be it. Amen.

The true Sanctum Regnum of the great Clavicle, otherwise called the Pacta conventa Daemoniorum, which has been spoken of for so long, is a thing very necessary to explain here, for the understanding of those who, wishing to force the Spirits, do not have the quality required to compose the Blasting Rod and the Cabalistic Circle, of which is spoken in the preceding Book. They cannot, I say, manage to force any Spirits to appear if they do not execute point by point all that is described hereafter, concerning the manner of making Pacts with whatever Spirits they may be; whether to have Treasures, whether to have the enjoyment of women and girls and to have whatever favor one wishes, whether to discover the most hidden secrets in all the Courts and Cabinets of the World, whether to unveil the most impenetrable secrets, whether to have a Spirit work at night on his Work, whether to make hail or storm fall wherever one wishes, whether to make yourself invisible, whether to have yourself transported wherever you wish, whether to open all locks, to see everything that happens in houses, and to learn all the tricks and subtleties of Shepherds; whether to acquire the hand of Glory and to know all the qualities and virtues of Metals, of Minerals, of Plants and of all pure and impure Animals, and to do things so surprising that there is no man who is not in the utmost surprise to see that by the means of making a Pact with some Spirits, one can discover the greatest secrets of Nature; which are hidden from the eyes of all other men. It is by the means of the Clavicle of the great King Solomon, that one has discovered the true manner of making Pacts, which he himself used, to acquire so many riches, to have the enjoyment of so many women, and to know the most impenetrable secrets of nature, by which one can do all sorts of good; and all sorts of evil.
Finally we will begin by describing the names of the principal Spirits with their Powers and Abilities, and then we will explain the Pacta Daemoniorum, or the true manner of making Pacts, with whatever Spirits it may be. Here follow the Names and Signs of the principal infernal Spirits.
Their Signs and Characters.
LUCIFER, Emperor. [SIGIL]
BELZEBUTH, Prince. [SIGIL]
ASTAROT, Grand Duke.
Then come the superior Spirits, who are subordinate to the three named above. Namely:
Their Signs and Characters.
LUCIFUGE, Prime Minister.
SATANACHIA, Grand General.
AGALIAREPT, also General.
FLEURETY, Lieutenant General.
SARGATANAS, Brigadier.
NEBIROS, Field Marshal.
The six great Spirits I have just named direct their power over all the Infernal Power that is given to the other Spirits. They have in their service eighteen other Spirits, who are subordinate to them. Namely:
- Bael. 10. Bathim.
- Agares. 11. Pursan.
- Marbas. 12. Eligor.
- Pruslas. 13. Loray.
- Aamon. 14. Valefar.
- Barbatos. 15. Foraii.
- Buer. 16. Ayperos.
- Gusoyn. 17. Nuberus.
- Botis. 18. Glasyalabolas.
After having indicated the names of the eighteen Spirits, who are inferior to the six that I have already described above, it is well to advise you of what follows:
Namely:
That LUCIFUGE commands the first three, who are named Bael, Agares and Marbas.
SATANACHIA, commands Pruslas, Aamon and Barbatos.
AGALIAREPT, commands Buer, Gusoyn and Botis.
FLEURETY, commands Bathim, Pursan and Eligor.
SARGATANAS, commands Loray, Valefar and Foraii.
NEBIROS, commands Ayperos, Nuberus and Glasyalabolas.
And although there are still millions of Spirits, who are all subordinate to those named above, it is useless to name them, because one never uses them, because it pleases the superior Spirits to make them work in their place, because they use all these inferior Spirits as though they were their Workers or their Slaves.
Here precisely are the Powers, Sciences, Arts and Talents of the Spirits named above, so that whoever wishes to make a Pact may find in each of the Talents of the six superior Spirits, what he needs.
The first is the great LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE, Prime Minister of the Infernal; he has the power that LUCIFER has given him over all the Riches and over all the Treasures of the world. He has under him Bael, Agares and Marbas, and several other thousands of Demons or Spirits who are all subordinate to him.
The second is the great SATANACHIA, Grand General; he has the power to subject to him all women and all girls, and to do with them what he wishes. He commands the great Legion of Spirits, he has under him Pruslas, Aamon and Barbatos, &c. &c.
AGALIAREPT, also General, has the Power to discover the most hidden secrets, in all the Courts and in all the Cabinets of the world; he unveils the greatest mysteries; he commands the second Legion of Spirits, he has under him Guer11 Gusoyn and Botis, &c. &c.
FLEURETY, Lieutenant General, has the Power to do whatever work one wishes during the night. He also makes hail fall wherever he wishes. He commands a very considerable corps of Spirits, he has under him Bathim, Pursan and Eligor, &c. &c.
SARGATANAS, Brigadier, has the Power to make you invisible, to transport you everywhere, to open all locks, to show you everything that happens inside houses, to teach you all the tricks and subtleties of Shepherds; he commands several Brigades of Spirits. He has under him Loray, Valefar and Foraii, &c. &c.
NEBIROS, Field Marshal and Inspector General, has the Power to give harm to whoever he wishes; he teaches the qualities of Metals, of Minerals, of Plants, and of all pure and impure Animals; it is he who also has the Art of predicting the future, being one of the greatest Necromancers of all the infernal Spirits; he goes everywhere, he has inspection over all the infernal Militias; he has under him Ayperos, Nuberus and Glasyalabolas, &c. &c.
WARNING.
When you wish to make your Pact with one of the principal Spirits I have just named, you will begin the day before the Pact by going to cut with a new knife that has never served, a Wand of wild Hazel, which has never borne fruit and which resembles the Blasting Rod, like the one which is already described, and of which you have the figure in the 1st Book, positively at the moment that the Sun appears on our Horizon: this being done, you will provide yourself with an Ematille stone, and two blessed Candles, and you will then choose a place for the execution where no one will disturb you. You may even make the Pact in a room set apart, or in some ruined old Castle, because the Spirit has the power to transport whatever Treasure he pleases there. This being done, you will trace a Triangle with your Ematille stone, and this only the first time you make your Pact; then you will place the two blessed candles to the side and placed toward the triangle of Pacts as you see hereafter, placing the Holy Name of Jesus behind, so that the Spirits can do no harm: then you will place yourself in the middle of the said triangle, having in hand the mysterious Wand, with the great Appellation to the Spirit of the Clavicle, the Demand you wish to make to the Spirit, with the Pact and the Dismissal of the Spirit, as it is marked hereafter, along with the model of the Cabalistic Triangle of Pacts.
Having executed exactly everything that is marked above, you will begin to recite the following Appellation with hope and firmness.
Great Appellation of the Spirits with whom one wishes to make a Pact, drawn from the great Clavicle.
Emperor LUCIFER, master of all the rebellious Spirits, I pray you to be favorable in the Appellation that I make to your great Minister LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE, having the desire to make a pact with him. I pray you also, Prince Belzebuth, to protect me in my enterprise. Oh Count Astarot, be propitious to me and grant that this night the great LUCIFUGE appear to me in human form, and without any foul odor, and that he grant me, by means of the Pact that I am going to present to him, all the Riches I need.
Oh! great Lucifuge, I pray you to leave your dwelling in whatever part of the World it may be for to come and speak to me, otherwise I will compel you by the force of the great living God, of His dear Son and of the Holy Spirit. Obey promptly or you will be eternally tormented by the force of the Powerful words of the great Clavicle of Solomon, which he used to oblige the rebellious Spirits to receive his Pact. So appear at once or I will continually torment you by the force of these powerful words of the Clavicle; Aglon, Tetragram, vaycheon stimulamaton exphares retrogrammaton olyoran irion esytion existion eryona onera erasym moym messias soter Emanuel Sabaoth Adonay, te adoro, & t’invoque. Amen.
You are sure that as soon as you have read the powerful words indicated above, the Spirit will appear and will tell you what follows:
Apparition of the Spirit.
“Here I am, what do you ask of me? Why do you trouble my rest? Answer me.”
LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE.
Demand to the Spirit.
“I ask you to make a Pact with me, and that you enrich me at once, otherwise I will torment you by the Powerful Words of the Clavicle.”
N. N.
Response of the Spirit.
“I cannot grant your demand, except on the condition that you give yourself to me in twenty years, to do with your body and your soul as I please.”
LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE.
Then you will throw him your Pact which must be written in your own hand, on a small piece of Virgin Parchment, which consists of these few words hereafter, adding your signature with your true blood.
Here is the PACT.
I promise to the great LUCIFUGE to reward him in twenty years for all the Treasures he will give me. In faith of which I have signed
N. N.
“I cannot grant your demand.”
LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE.
Then to force the Spirit to obey you, you will re-read the great Appellation with the terrible words of the Clavicle until the Spirit reappears and tells you what follows:
Second Apparition of the Spirit.
“Why do you torment me further? If you leave me in peace, I will give you the nearest Treasure, on the condition that you will consecrate to me a coin every first Monday of each month, and that you will not call me more than one day each week, namely: from ten o’clock in the evening until two o’clock after midnight; pick up your Pact, I have signed it and if you do not keep your word you will be mine in twenty years.”
LUCIFUGE ROFOCALE.
Response to the Spirit.
“I acquiesce to your demand on the condition that you will show me the nearest Treasure that I will be able to carry away at once.”
N. N.
Response of the Spirit.
“Follow me, and take the Treasure that I will show you.”
Then you will follow the Spirit by the route of the Treasure which is indicated at the Triangle of Pacts, without being alarmed and you will throw your Pact, all signed, onto the Treasure while touching it with your Wand, you will take as much as you can, and you will return to the triangle walking backwards, you will place your Treasure before you and you will begin at once to read the Dismissal of the Spirit as it is marked hereafter.
CONJURATION and dismissal of the Spirit with whom one has made a Pact.
Oh great Lucifuge, I am content with you for the present, I leave you in peace and permit you to withdraw wherever you please, without making any noise or leaving any foul odor. Think also of your engagement of my Pact, for if you fail me by an instant you may be sure that I will torment you eternally with the great and powerful words of the Clavicle of the great King Solomon, by which one forces all the rebellious Spirits to obey.
Prayer to the Almighty in the form of Thanksgiving.
Almighty God, Celestial Father, who created all things for the service and use of man, I give you most humble thanks for what, by your great goodness, you have permitted me, without risk, to make a Pact with one of your rebellious Spirits, and to subject him to give me everything I might need: I thank you, O Almighty God, for the good you have bestowed upon me during this night: deign to grant to me, a poor wretched creature, your precious favors: it is now, O great God, that I have known the full force and the power of your great promises, when you told us seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you; and as you have ordered and recommended us to relieve the Poor, deign, great God, to inspire me with true sentiments of charity, and grant that I may spread forth upon so holy a Work a great part of the Goods with which your great Divinity was pleased to fill me: grant, O great, great God, that I enjoy in tranquility these great Riches of which I am possessor; and do not allow that any rebellious Spirits harm me in the enjoyment of these precious Treasures which you have just permitted me to be master of. Inspire me also, O great God, with the sentiments necessary to be able to free myself from the clutches of the Demon and from all the evil Spirits. I place myself, great God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit, under your Holy protection. Amen.
ORISON To protect oneself from evil Spirits.
O Almighty Father! O Mother, the most tender of Mothers! O admirable exemplar of the sentiments and of the tenderness of Mothers! O Son, the flower of all Sons! O form of all forms! Soul, Spirit, Harmony and Number of all things, preserve us, protect us, guide us and be propitious to us. AMEN.
THIRD SECTION
Citation of the Aforesaid Spirits.12
When you wish to summon any spirit whose name and office you know from the above: first, be clean from all pollution for a minimum of three or four days; then you will be in the right frame of mind for the first citation, and the spirits will thereafter be more obedient: make therefore a circle, and call the spirit with much intention, first indeed holding a ring on your hand which shall contain [characters]: then, having recited this benediction in your name and that of your companions, if any shall be present, and by their effect you shall be equipped, nor shall there be harm from the spirits, indeed not the perdition of your soul.
Section 2. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: holy Trinity and inseparable unity, I invoke you, that you may be to me salvation and defense and protection of body and of soul and of all my possessions. By the virtue of the holy cross and by the virtue of your passion, I beseech you, Lord Jesus Christ, by the merits of the most blessed Mary Virgin and of your mother, and of all the saints, that you may grant me grace and power divine over all malignant spirits, that whatsoever by their names I shall invoke, they may from every part at once come and comply, and perfectly accomplish whatever I shall command, doing me no harm, neither causing fear, but rather obedient and ministering, by your strict virtue commanding, let them fulfill my commands, Amen; Holy, Holy, Lord God Sabaoth, who shall come to judge the living and the dead: you who are A and also the first and the last, King of kings and Lord of lords, Joth, Aglanabrath, El, Abiel, Anathiel, Amazim, Sedomel, Gayes, Hol, Ma, Elias, Ischiro, Atganatas, Ymas, Heli, Messias, by these holy names, and by all other holy names, I invoke you and I beseech you, Lord Jesus Christ, by your nativity, by your Baptism, by your passion and cross, by your ascension, by the coming of the Holy Spirit the Paraclete, by the bitterness of your soul when it departed from your body, by your five wounds, by the blood and water that flowed from your body, by your virtue, by the sacrament, which you gave to your disciples the day before you suffered, by the Holy Trinity, by the indivisible unity, by the blessed Mary your mother, by the Angels and archangels, by the prophets and Patriarchs and by all your saints, and by all the sacraments that are made in your honor: I adore you and I beseech you, and I ask and pray, that you may accept these prayers and conjurations and words of my mouth: which I shall wish to use. I ask, Lord Jesus Christ: give me virtue and power over all your angels who were cast from heaven to deceive the human race, to attract them, to constrain them, to bind them and to loose them alike. And to gather them before me, and to command them in all things, which they can do, let them obey, and let my words and my voice in no way be contemned: but let them be obedient to me and fear me, and through your humanity and mercy and grace I beseech you and through you, Adonay amay korta videgora mitay hel surana y fyon ylyely, and by all your holy names, by all your saints and holy ones, by the Angels, Archangels, powers, dominations and virtues, and by that name by which Solomon was wont to constrain the demons and bind them: Elh roceban hor agle gotb joth athio venoch aubrut, and by all the names that are written in these books and by the virtue of the same, insofar as you make me powerful enough to gather all your spirits cast down from heaven, so that I may truly question them on all my inquiries, that they may give me a true answer, and that they may obey all my commands, and that they may satisfy all my wishes without harm to my body and soul, mine and all things that pertain to me, through our Lord Jesus Christ your son, who with you lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, through all ages. Amen.
Section 3. O Father omnipotent, O wise son, O holy spirit who illuminates the hearts of men, O you three in persons, one true deity in substance by which Adam and Eve in their sins you spared, and on account of their sins you made your Son suffer death most shameful, on the wood of the holy cross you endured: O most merciful one, when I flee to your mercy and supplicate by all means I can, by these holy names of your son, namely A and also A and by all His other names, insofar as you may grant me virtue and power, that I may prevail over your spirits who were cast from heaven, that they may at once come before me and speak with me, and fulfill my commands at once and without delay, of their own will, without any harm to my body and of my soul and of my goods, &c. As is continued in the book called Ring of Solomon.
Section 4. O supreme and eternal Virtue of the Most High, who by His judgment calls them, vayeheon stimulameton exphares Ktragramaton olioram exytio existioneriona onera brasym messias sotker emanuel sabaoth adonay, I adore you, I invoke you, with all the strength of my mind I implore you, insofar as through your present prayers and consecrations and conjurations they may assemble: namely let the malignant spirits in the virtue of your names be summoned, and from every part let them come, and let them diligently and willingly accomplish whatever my exorcists shall command, let it be done, let it be done, Amen.
THE MAGICAL SECRET; Or the Grand ART of being able to speak to the Dead.
It is absolutely necessary to attend Christmas midnight Mass, at the precise moment where the Priest raises the Holy Host, he bows inwardly and says in a constrained voice:
Exsurgent mortui, et ad me veniunt.
[Let the dead rise and come to me.]
Scarcely will you have pronounced these six Latin words, than you must go to the cemetery, and at the first tomb that presents itself to your gaze; you will make this prayer: Infernal Powers, you who carry trouble throughout the universe, abandon your dark dwellings and go confine yourselves beyond the River Styx.
You will then add, after a few moments of silence: “If you hold within your power the one for whom I am concerned, I conjure you in the name of the King of Kings to make him appear to me at the hour and at the moment that I shall invoke you.”
After this ceremony, which it is indispensable to perform, you will take a handful of earth and scatter it, as one scatters grain in a field, saying in a low voice: “Let he who is but dust, awake from his tomb, let him arise from his ashes, and let him answer the objections I am going to put to him in the name of the Father of all men.” You will then kneel, turning your eyes toward the East, when you see that the gates of the Sun open,13 you will arm yourself with two bones of a dead person which you will place crosswise, and you will immediately throw them upon the first Temple or the first Church that strikes your view.
All these dispositions thus taken, you will make your way to the West, and when you have taken four thousand nine hundred steps you will lie down upon the ground stretched out full length, the two palms of the hands against your thighs, eyes toward heaven, and turned a little toward the side of the Moon. It is in this posture, that you will call, by his name, the person you wish to see, taking care not to be troubled; when you see the Specter appear, you will solicit its presence by these words: ego sum, te peto, et videre queo. [I am here, I seek you, and I wish to see you.] At the very moment you have articulated these words, your eyes will see with satisfaction the object that was dearest to them, and which was their most agreeable delight.
When you have obtained from the shade you invoke whatever seemed to you most suitable, you will send it away, saying: Retourne dans le Royaume des Elus: je suis content de ta presence; [Return to the Kingdom of the Elect: I am content with your presence;] then, leaving the posture in which you were placed, you will return to the same tomb, where you have already made a Prayer, and upon which you will make a cross with the point of your knife using the left hand.
The Reader will not forget that he must not omit the slightest circumstance of what is prescribed here; without that, one would run the risk of becoming oneself the prey of all the powers of hell.
See the Figures hereafter.
SECRETS OF THE MAGICAL ART Of the Grand Grimoire.
To make the Divining Rod, and to make it turn.
From the moment the sun appears on the horizon, you take from the left hand a virgin Wand of wild hazel, and cut it from the right in three strokes, saying: Je te ramasse au nom d’Eloim, Mitrathan, Adonay et Semiphoras, [I pick you up in the name of Eloim, Mitrathan, Adonay and Semiphoras,] so that you may have the virtue of the rod of Moses and of Jacob, to discover everything that I would wish to know; and to make it turn one must say, holding it tightly in one’s hands by the two ends that form the fork, Je te commande au nom d’Eloim Murathon, Adonay et Semiphoras de me révéler ( ) [I command you in the name of Eloim Murathon, Adonay and Semiphoras to reveal to me ( )].14
To win every time one enters the Lotteries.
One must, before going to bed, recite three times this Orison, after which you will place it under your ear, written on virgin parchment, upon which you will have had a Mass of the Holy Spirit said, and during sleep the Genius of your Planet will come to tell you the hour at which you must go to take your Ticket.
ORISON.
Amen.
[Lord Jesus Christ, who said “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” behold, for you have loved truth, and the uncertain and hidden things of your wisdom you have made manifest to me; further reveal to me in this night as it was revealed to little ones things unknown to others, and things to come, and other things, teach me so that I may know all things, whether it be so or not; if so, show me death adorned with every good food, a beautiful and pleasant orchard, or some pleasing thing; but if not, send me burning fire, or running water, or whatever other thing may please the Lord, and may the Angels Uriel, Rubiel, and Barachiel be to me great lovers and doers to obtain this work which I desire to know, to see, to know and to foresee, through that God who shall come to judge the living and the dead, and the world by fire. Amen.]
You will say three Pater and three Ave Maria for the Souls in Purgatory.
FIN.
Translator’s Notes
Verge Foudroyante - literally “Thundering Rod” or “Blasting Rod.” A forked hazel wand tipped with magnetized steel, the grimoire’s primary instrument of power over spirits. ↩︎
Ematille - a bloodstone (heliotrope), a variety of green chalcedony spotted with red jasper. Used in the grimoire tradition as both a protective talisman and a drawing instrument for magical circles and triangles. ↩︎
Karcist - the lead operator in the ritual, the one who speaks directly to the spirits. The term likely derives from a corruption of Greek or Latin. The assistants remain silent throughout. ↩︎
White wood - likely willow or poplar, traditionally considered “light” or pure woods in European folk magic. ↩︎
Nineteen and a half inches - approximately 49.5 cm. The “pouce” (French inch) of the Ancien Régime was slightly longer than the modern inch (about 2.707 cm), making this closer to 53 cm by pre-revolutionary measure. ↩︎
Zariatnatmik - one of the divine/angelic names of power invoked throughout the grimoire. Its etymology is obscure, likely a corruption through multiple manuscript transmissions. ↩︎
Four coffin nails from a dead child’s coffin - a recurrent ingredient in European grimoire tradition, appearing in multiple texts. The connection between death, iron, and binding magic runs deep in folk practice. ↩︎
The Centum Regum section switches from French to Italian. This section contains Lucifer’s formal oath of obedience to the book’s owner, structured as a legal document in seven chapters (Capo Primo through Capo Septimo). ↩︎
The Italian of the Centum Regum is grammatically rough and contains Latinisms, suggesting it was either translated from Latin by a non-native Italian speaker, or corrupted through copying. ↩︎
The dismissal formula switches to Latin: “Go in peace to your place, and peace be between you, to return to me when I shall invoke you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” ↩︎
The text reads “Guer” here but likely means “Buer,” consistent with the earlier listing of the eighteen subordinate spirits. ↩︎
Citatio Praedictorum Spirituum - this entire section is in Latin, a formal exorcistic citation drawing heavily on Christian liturgical language and Solomonic authority. The Latin is uneven, mixing classical grammar with medieval Church Latin. ↩︎
“The gates of the Sun open” - i.e., at dawn. The necromantic ritual spans from Christmas midnight Mass through the following dawn. ↩︎
The blank parentheses indicate the operator should insert whatever specific thing they wish the rod to reveal. ↩︎
