Scorpio

Scorpius is one of the few constellations that genuinely resembles what it represents. Its curved tail of stars mimics a scorpion's strike pose, and ancient cultures recognized this shape independently. Babylonian astronomers called it MUL.GIR.TAB, the Scorpion, and considered it a creature of the underworld. In Egyptian astronomy, the scorpion goddess Serket protected the canopic jars containing a mummy's organs. The scorpion's ability to kill with a single sting made it a universal symbol of death, danger, and hidden power.

Greek mythology connected Scorpius to the death of Orion. In the most common version, Artemis or Gaia sent the scorpion to kill the boastful hunter. Zeus placed both in the sky on opposite sides, so they never appear together. This opposition between Scorpio and Orion/Taurus became a foundational principle in ancient star lore. Ptolemy assigned Scorpio the domicile of Mars (later also Pluto), connecting it to warfare, surgery, and the transformation of matter. Medieval astrologers associated Scorpio with alchemy, espionage, and the mysteries of generation and corruption.

Modern astrology transformed Scorpio from a sign of death into a sign of regeneration. Pluto's discovery in 1930 gave Scorpio a second ruler alongside Mars, reinforcing its connection to depth psychology, hidden wealth, and power dynamics. The astrologer Jeff Green developed evolutionary astrology largely through Pluto and Scorpio symbolism. Its association with the eighth house links it to shared resources, inheritance, sexuality, and psychological transformation. The fixed water quality produces emotional depth that can become either profound intimacy or destructive obsession.
