Anaximenes of Miletus proposed air as the fundamental substance of the cosmos around 546 BCE, predating the four-element system. For him, everything arose from air through condensation and rarefaction. Empedocles later established air as one of four equal roots. In alchemy, air represented the volatile principle: mercury, the spirit that could be driven off by heat and recaptured by cooling. Distillation, one of alchemy's core operations, was essentially the manipulation of air. The alchemist heated a substance until its spirit rose as vapor (air), then condensed it back into liquid form.
