About Capricorn

Capricorn is the achiever of the zodiac. Ambitious, disciplined, and patient, Capricorn climbs the mountain one step at a time, knowing that success comes to those who work hard and plan carefully.

Ambitious, disciplined, and responsible, Capricorn is the master of self-control. Ruled by Saturn, they understand that lasting success requires patience and persistent effort. Capricorns may seem serious, but they have a dry wit and deep loyalty to those they love.

History & Mythology

The Sea-Goat is one of the most ancient and puzzling zodiac symbols. Babylonian astronomers called it SUHUR.MASH, the Goat-Fish, and associated it with the god Enki (later Ea), lord of wisdom and the subterranean freshwater ocean called the Abzu. Cylinder seals from the third millennium BCE show this hybrid creature: a goat's upper body with a fish tail. The symbol appeared on boundary stones marking sacred contracts. Enki's dual nature, half terrestrial, half aquatic, represented the union of practical wisdom with the depths of the unconscious.

Greek mythology offered a less elegant origin. The goat-god Pan, fleeing the monster Typhon, jumped into the Nile and tried to transform into a fish. He only half-succeeded, producing the goat-fish form. Zeus placed him in the sky for the amusement this caused. A more serious tradition connected Capricorn to Amalthea, the goat who nursed the infant Zeus in hiding. Saturn became the ruling planet, giving Capricorn its association with time, limitation, structure, and the slow accumulation of mastery through effort.

Modern astrology recognizes Capricorn as the archetype of the builder and the strategist. The astrologer Liz Greene wrote extensively about Saturn and Capricorn, connecting them to the process of maturation through difficulty. Its association with the tenth house links it to career, public reputation, authority, and legacy. The cardinal earth quality makes Capricorn a sign of action, not passive endurance. It initiates structures, institutions, and long-term plans. Capricorn's coldness in pop astrology misreads what is actually a form of emotional self-reliance developed through early responsibility.
