Cancer

The Crab constellation has ancient roots in Babylonian astronomy, where it appeared as MUL.AL.LUL, associated with the tortoise or snapping turtle. The Egyptians saw a scarab beetle in these stars, linking it to the sun god Khepri and the cycle of rebirth. The crab's sideways movement and its hard shell protecting a soft interior became central metaphors across cultures. In Hindu astronomy, the corresponding nakshatra Pushya was considered the most auspicious lunar mansion for nurturing activities.

Greek mythology connected Cancer to the Twelve Labors of Heracles. While Heracles fought the Lernaean Hydra, Hera sent a giant crab to distract him by pinching his foot. Heracles crushed it, but Hera rewarded the crab's loyalty by placing it among the stars. Ptolemy assigned Cancer the exaltation of Jupiter and the domicile of the Moon. The Moon's rulership gave Cancer its deep association with cycles, tides, memory, and the maternal principle.

In modern astrology, Cancer represents emotional intelligence and the need for security. The psychoanalyst Liz Greene connected Cancer to the Jungian concept of the Great Mother archetype, encompassing both the nurturing and the devouring aspects of protection. Cancer's association with the fourth house links it to home, family, ancestry, and psychological foundations. The cardinal water quality means Cancer doesn't just feel emotions passively. It acts on them, creating safe spaces and defending what it loves with surprising ferocity.
