About Aries

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and that's exactly how those born under this sign see themselves: first. Aries are the leaders of the pack, first in line to get things going. Whether it's a new project, adventure, or idea, Aries dives headfirst with enthusiasm and confidence.

Bold, ambitious, and competitive, Aries is driven by the desire to be number one. They're natural leaders who aren't afraid to take risks or venture into unknown territory. Their ruling planet Mars gives them boundless energy, courage, and a direct approach to life. Aries doesn't beat around the bush - they say what they mean and mean what they say.

History & Mythology

The constellation Aries traces back to Babylonian astronomy, where it was known as MUL.LU.HUN.GA, the Agrarian Worker. The Greeks recast it as Chrysomallus, the golden-fleeced ram whose rescue of Phrixus and Helle from their murderous stepmother became one of mythology's great escape stories. When Phrixus reached Colchis safely, he sacrificed the ram to Zeus and hung its golden fleece in a sacred grove. That fleece later drew Jason and the Argonauts on their own legendary quest. The ram earned its place among the stars as a reward for its sacrifice.

In Hellenistic astrology, Aries held special status as the first sign of the zodiac. Ptolemy placed it at the vernal equinox, the point where the sun crosses the celestial equator in spring. This position gave Aries its association with beginnings, initiation, and the raw energy of new life. Mars, the Roman god of war, became its ruling planet. The connection was natural: both Aries and Mars embodied action, aggression, and the drive to conquer. Medieval astrologers assigned Aries rulership over the head and face, linking the ram's horns to the frontal bones of the skull.

Modern psychological astrology expanded the Aries archetype beyond simple aggression. Carl Jung's concept of individuation maps onto Aries energy: the drive to become a distinct self, separate from the collective. Dane Rudhyar described Aries as the "impulse to be," the first stirring of individual consciousness. In contemporary practice, Aries represents the courage to start, to act before certainty arrives, to define identity through doing rather than thinking. The sign's shadow side, impulsiveness and impatience, is simply the excess of its greatest strength.
