Wassermann

The Water Bearer is one of the oldest identified constellations. Babylonian astronomers called it GU.LA, the Great One, and associated it with the god Ea (Enki) pouring the waters of life and wisdom onto the earth. In Egyptian astronomy, the Water Bearer was connected to the annual Nile flood. The god Hapi, depicted as a plump figure pouring water from two vases, regulated the inundation that sustained Egyptian civilization. Despite being an air sign in Western astrology, Aquarius retained its water symbolism across all ancient cultures.

Greek mythology identified the constellation with Ganymede, the beautiful Trojan prince abducted by Zeus (in the form of an eagle) to serve as cupbearer to the gods on Mount Olympus. The myth carried complex associations: divine favor, the transgression of mortality, and service to a higher order. Saturn became the traditional ruler, and when Uranus was discovered in 1781, astrologers assigned it as co-ruler of Aquarius. This dual rulership captures the sign's paradox: it respects structure (Saturn) while seeking to revolutionize it (Uranus).

Modern astrology positions Aquarius as the sign of collective progress and unconventional thinking. The astrologer Richard Tarnas connected Uranus-Aquarius themes to every major period of revolutionary change, from the French Revolution to the digital age. Its association with the eleventh house links it to friendships, group organizations, social causes, and hopes for the future. The fixed air quality produces ideas with staying power, not fleeting fads. Aquarius' emotional detachment is often misread as coldness. In practice, it reflects a mind that processes feelings through analysis rather than expression.
