Fische

The Two Fish constellation closes the zodiac cycle. Babylonian astronomers knew it as the Tails (KUN.MESH), representing the goddess Anunitum. In the older Babylonian tradition, these stars marked the end of the agricultural year and the return of the rainy season. Egyptian astronomy connected the fish to the Nile's abundance: Oxyrhynchus fish were sacred to the goddess Hatmehit, whose cult center lay in the Delta. The fish swimming in opposite directions symbolized the tension between the material and spiritual worlds, a theme that persists in modern Pisces interpretation.

Greek mythology told how Aphrodite and Eros transformed into fish to escape the monster Typhon near the Euphrates River. They tied their tails together with a cord to avoid losing each other in the current. Other traditions connected the fish to the Syrian goddess Derceto, who took fish form after falling into a lake near Bambyce. Jupiter became the traditional ruler, and Neptune, discovered in 1846, was later assigned as co-ruler. Neptune's domain over the ocean, illusion, and dissolution gave Pisces its modern reputation as the sign of mysticism and altered states.

Modern astrology sees Pisces as the sign of dissolution and return to the source. The astrologer Dane Rudhyar called it the "omega point" of the zodiac, where individual identity dissolves back into the collective unconscious before rebirth in Aries. Its association with the twelfth house connects it to hidden things: hospitals, prisons, monasteries, and the contents of the unconscious mind. The mutable water quality produces extreme adaptability that can manifest as empathy or as boundary loss. Pisces' escapism reflects a nervous system that absorbs more than it can process, a sensitivity that is both its gift and its burden.
