On New Year’s Eve along the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, millions dressed in white wade into the ocean carrying offerings for Yemanja, Queen of the Sea. Small wooden boats with flowers, candles, and mirrors are floated out on the waves. This is the largest expression of West African spiritual practice in the Americas.
