The heart of the Makahiki season. The he’e nalu (wave-sliding / surfing) competitions were the most prestigious, with chiefs wagering land, canoes, and freedom on the outcome. The mokomoko (boxing), hakamoa (wrestling), and holua (lava-sled racing down volcanic slopes at 50+ mph) tested warriors. Hula performances honored Lono through sacred dance. The games maintained social bonds during the peace season.
