Ritual mourning for the destruction of Ur (c. 2004 BCE), one of the most powerful literary texts of ancient Mesopotamia. The goddess Ningal weeps as her city burns: ‘My city which no longer exists, my city which no longer has a place.’ The lament was recited annually in temples for centuries. The tradition of mourning destroyed cities became a genre (the city lament) unique to Sumerian literature.
