Approximately eight days after inferior conjunction, Venus reappears in the predawn sky as the Morning Star, completing its underworld journey. This heliacal rising was the single most important astronomical event in Mesoamerican cosmology. It represented Quetzalcoatl’s resurrection after self-immolation, the Hero Twins’ triumph over the Lords of Xibalba, and the cosmic principle that death is a necessary passage to renewed life. The first appearance of Morning Star Venus was considered extremely dangerous, its light like spears thrown at the earth. Kings launched wars timed to this rising.
