The second occurrence of this fast in 2026 (now in Hebrew year 5787). This fast commemorates the beginning of Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem, the first link in the chain of events that led to the Temple’s destruction and the Babylonian exile. The Chief Rabbinate of Israel also designated this day as a general Kaddish day (Yom HaKaddish HaKlali) for Holocaust victims whose date of death is unknown, linking ancient destruction to modern catastrophe in the Jewish consciousness of exile and return.
