The first Rooster Day market (Ichi-no-Tori) of November 2026, held at Ōtori shrines across Japan, most famously in Asakusa, Tokyo. Vendors sell kumade (ornamental bamboo rakes) believed to help the buyer ‘rake in’ good fortune for the coming year. Each purchase is sealed with rhythmic hand-clapping (tejime) by the vendor. The rooster connection traces to the myth of Ame-no-Uzume’s dance that lured Amaterasu from her cave, and the roosters that crowed to announce the return of light.
