Kannamesai Main Rite (Ise Grand Shrine)

The principal day of the Kannamesai at Ise, when the newly harvested rice is formally presented to Amaterasu. The Emperor sends an imperial envoy (chokushi) carrying offerings of silk, rice, and sacred sakaki branches. The rice offered is specifically grown in a dedicated sacred paddy within the shrine precincts. After the divine offering, all other shrines across Japan may begin their own autumn harvest festivals. The rite establishes the cosmic hierarchy: Amaterasu eats first, the Emperor second, the people last.
