The Hijri-calendar observance of Rumi’s passing, on the 5th of Jumada al-Thani. Some Sufi orders, especially in the Arab world and South Asia, mark this lunar date rather than the fixed December 17 solar date observed in Turkey. Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273), the Persian poet-mystic of Konya, transformed the experience of divine love into the greatest body of mystical poetry in any language. His Masnavi is called ’the Quran in Persian,’ and his path of ecstatic love (ishq) and whirling meditation (sama) founded the Mevlevi order.
