Winter Solstice Alignment at Karnak

At dawn on the winter solstice, sunlight travels along the main east-west axis of the Temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak, passing through the eastern gate and great hypostyle halls to illuminate the Holy of Holies. The alignment was deliberately engineered over 4,000 years ago, linking the shortest day to the symbolic rebirth of the sun god. The phenomenon lasts only minutes.
