All Hallows' Eve / Halloween

The vigil of All Saints, when the veil between living and dead was thinnest. Jack-o-lanterns were carved from turnips in Ireland long before pumpkins. Dumb suppers were set with an empty place for the dead, eaten in silence. The Church placed All Saints here in the 8th century, absorbing Celtic Samhain without extinguishing its older power.
