Xiayuan Festival (下元节)

The 15th day of the 10th lunar month completes the Three Yuan cycle as the birthday of the Water Official (Shuiguan), who relieves misfortune and wards off calamity. The quietest and least known of the three festivals, Xiayuan reflects the Taoist principle that Water, the most yin of the Five Elements, works through yielding and flowing around obstacles rather than confronting them. Devotees pray for the removal of bad luck and spiritual obstacles. Taoist temples perform repentance rituals (chanhui) to dissolve accumulated negative karma before the year’s end.
