Lidong (立冬) — Beginning of Winter

The nineteenth solar term signals the Water element’s full ascendancy and the retreat of yang deep into the earth. The Dark Warrior (Xuanwu), the tortoise-serpent guardian of the North, governs this season. In Taoist internal alchemy, winter is the time to store jing (essence) in the Kidneys and practice zuowang (sitting in forgetfulness) meditation. The body mirrors the earth: surface activity ceases while deep processes of regeneration continue in darkness. Nourishing soups and tonic herbs support the Kidney-Water system.
