The 9th day of the 9th month: double yang (9 is the supreme yang number). The day of maximum yang energy, considered both auspicious and dangerous. Families climb mountains (ascending toward yang), drink chrysanthemum wine (which wards off evil), and carry dogwood sprigs. In the original legend, a Taoist master warned his disciple to take his family to high ground to escape plague-bringing spirits.
