The elder month begins, the last tree of the Ogham calendar year. Elder was the tree of the Cailleach, the divine hag of winter. Burning elder wood in a hearth invited death into the home. The Elder Mother, a spirit dwelling within the tree, had to be asked permission before any branch was cut.
