The last Sunday of July, tens of thousands climb Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, Ireland. The mountain was sacred to the Celts long before St. Patrick’s 40-day fast there in 441 CE. Archaeological finds on the summit include pre-Christian ritual deposits. The barefoot climb continues a tradition at least 5,000 years old.
