Martinmas preserved the Celtic winter slaughter: animals that could not be fed through winter were killed and salted on this date. In Ireland and Scotland, blood from the first slaughtered animal was sprinkled on doorposts for protection. The tradition blended with St. Martin’s feast but the practice predates Christianity by centuries.
