The only Celtic deity to receive her own feast day in the Roman calendar. Epona, the Great Mare, was honored on the second day of Saturnalia. Roman cavalrymen adopted her as their patroness. Beyond her role as protector of horses, Epona served as psychopomp, guiding souls through death to the Otherworld.
