Ganden Ngamcho (Tsongkhapa's Parinirvana / Butter Lamp Festival)

Anniversary of the passing of Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), founder of the Gelug school and one of Tibet’s greatest scholars and meditators. On the 25th of the 10th Tibetan month, thousands of butter lamps illuminate monasteries and homes across Tibet. Tsongkhapa’s synthesis of sutra and tantra, his emphasis on the graduated path (lamrim), and his revival of monastic discipline transformed Tibetan Buddhism. The light of the lamps symbolizes the dispelling of ignorance by wisdom.
