Uma Raymi (Water Festival, Rain Invocation)

The October water festival when Inca priests performed rituals to summon the rains. Llamas were tied in the plaza and denied water and food; their cries were understood as pleas to Viracocha for rain. Black llamas were preferred because their color associated them with rain clouds. When the rains arrived, the llamas were released and feasted.
