Tens of thousands of Cubans walk to the church of El Rincón (San Lázaro) on December 17, many on their knees, dragging chains, or carrying heavy stones. San Lázaro syncretizes with Babalu-Ayé, the orisha of disease and healing. He walks with crutches, covered in sores, accompanied by dogs. Petitioners ask for healing, especially from skin diseases and epidemics. The pilgrimage is the largest annual religious gathering in Cuba.
