Hoia Baciu Forest
A Romanian forest near Cluj-Napoca where a shepherd vanished with 200 sheep, trees grow in corkscrews, a central clearing refuses to support vegetation, and a physicist found no explanation for the magnetic anomalies.

Hoia Baciu is a forest on the western outskirts of Cluj-Napoca, in the Transylvania region of Romania. It covers roughly 250 hectares of hilly terrain. Since the 1960s, it has accumulated a reputation for anomalous phenomena that no researcher has been able to confirm or dispel.
The Reports
A shepherd reportedly vanished inside the forest with a flock of 200 sheep. A five-year-old girl disappeared and reappeared five years later wearing the same clothes, with no memory of the intervening time. The trees in certain sections grow in tight spirals, curving sharply near the ground before straightening. A roughly circular clearing in the center of the forest supports no vegetation despite soil analysis showing normal composition.
The Investigation
In the 1960s, a biologist named Alexandru Sift began photographing the forest and claimed to capture anomalous shapes on film. Adrian Patrut, a professor of chemistry at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, conducted measurements in the forest and reported magnetic anomalies he could not explain by standard geological means. The findings have not been replicated by independent teams.
The Forest Today
Hoia Baciu is open to the public and crisscrossed by hiking trails. It sits minutes from a major Romanian city. The twisted trees are visible and photographed constantly. The clearing remains bare. Tour operators market it as the most haunted forest in the world. The forest does not cooperate with easy explanations, but it does not cooperate with dramatic ones either.
