Fire festivals, and a calendar of trees
The Celtic sacred year has two layers, one old and one surprisingly new. The genuinely ancient core is the four fire festivals of the Gaelic year, Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh, the cross-quarter days that the modern Wheel of the Year later absorbed. These were kept with bonfires and the driving of cattle to the summer pastures, and customs like Beltane fire divination survived in living folk practice into modern times.
The other layer is the Ogham ’tree calendar’, the thirteen lunar months each named for a tree, Birch and Rowan and Oak and the rest. It looks ancient and is not: the poet Robert Graves built it in 1948, in his book The White Goddess, out of the medieval Ogham alphabet, and it has no real basis in the historical Druidic year. We keep the tree months on the calendar because they are now widely observed, while saying plainly where they come from.
What this calendar holds
Alongside the fire festivals and the tree months, the year holds older Gaulish feasts like Epona’s day for the horse goddess, and survivals like Crom Dubh Sunday, the harvest pilgrimage that still climbs the Irish hills. The genuinely old and the modern reconstruction sit side by side here, labelled for what each is.
